Two Young Adult Authors Visit Centennial Library

YA author Neal Shusterman visited Centennial on November 18, 2014, thanks to the generous support by the Champaign Public Library Friends; Shusterman conducted a creative writing workshop for Centennial students. Neal Shusterman is the author of more than 30 books for teens, including the hugely popular Unwind series, the last book in the series Undivided was recently published in October. During the 60 minute program Shusterman discussed the creative writing process and answered students' questions. He ended the program by autographing copies of his books for students. Author Nnedi Okorafor visited Centennial on October 17, 2014; she gave three presentations for sophomore English classes on creative writing. Her visit was sponsored by the University of Illinois Youth Literature Festival. Okorafor is a novelist of African-based science fiction, fantasy and magical realism for both children and adults. Her young adult books are Akata Witch, Zahrah the Windseeker and The Shadow Speaker; Akata Witch 2: Breaking Kola will be released in 2015. You can learn more about Nnedi Okorafor at www.nnedi.com.

Gilder Lehrman Exhibition: Emancipation and Its Legacies

The Centennial Library is hosting an exhibit through December 5, 2014, developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in partnership with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Emancipation and Its Legacies. Drawing on letters, personal accounts, images, and other documents from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, the exhibit traces the major events that led to President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Students enrolled in American History will view the exhibit with their classes.

3M Cloud eBooks @ Centennial Library

3M Cloud eBooks are now included in the Centennial Library online catalog right along with print books. You can access eBooks in the collection via the 3M Cloud app. You will need to download the app to your personal e-reading device. See Ms. Helms in the library and she will advise you on how to access the 3M Cloud app.

The 3M Cloud eBook collection contains over 3,000 titles and will continue to grow through the shared consortium of libraries in the Illinois Heartland Library System SHARE online catalog. This opening day collection is supported by eRead Illinois a grant from the State Library, in addition, each participating library contributes to the purchase of future eBook titles.

Kindle E-readers @ Centennial Library

The Centennial Library is pleased to offer Kindle e-readers to students as yet another opportunity for them to read and enjoy books. Students may borrow Kindle e-readers for a two week loan period. To be eligible to borrow an e-reader from the library, students must return to the library an e-reader permission and acceptable use form signed by a parent or guardian and complete a brief e-reader training session.

Check with library staff and/or attend a library book club meeting on Thursdays after school in the library to learn more about how to borrow a Kindle e-reader.
